BonnaJoo

bonnawhatWell, I’ve just gotten back from my yearly pilgrimage to Manchester, TN for what I consider to be the best music festival in the US: Bonnaroo. I’ve gone for the past four years, and I never come back disappointed. This year I was joined by a nice assortment of JDubbers– comedian Michael Showalter, and Stuart Bogie and Brian Chase of The Sway Machinery. Michael performed with Michael Ian Black in the comedy tent, Stuart performed with his friends in TV on the Radio and Brian played with his other band…you may have heard of them, they’re called the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

To satiate your curiosity, here is a list of fantastic music I got to see: Bruce Springsteen, Nine Inch Nails, Phish, David Byrne, Wilco, Al Green, Snoop Dogg, The Mars Volta, TV on the Radio, MGMT, Andrew Bird, Band of Horses, Girl Talk, Bon Iver, Michael & Michael Have Issues, Of Montreal, Animal Collective, Neko Case, Amadou & Mariam, Santigold, Okkervil River, St. Vincent, Passion Pit, Dillinger Escape Plan, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Dirty Projectors, Yeasayer and Janelle Monae.

And here are some things you need to know: the sound on Animal Collective was absolutely TERRIBLE, but I don’t think it was their fault that the bass was 100x too high. MGMT’s excuse for a late night ’show’ was the most boring set at the festival, where Santigold was by far the most interesting. The Beastie Boys came out to watch her perform! I stood behind David Byrne during the Dirty Projectors (St. Vincent watched too, she knew all the words) and I got to see his big smile before he bounded up on stage to play “Knotty Pine.” I got to Phish’s second set on Sunday just in time to catch Bruce’s appearance, where he jammed out “Glory Days” to 10+ minutes. He was really excited to be up there, and something about him dueling on guitar with Trey was really strangely sensual! Elvis Costello played with Jenny Lewis, Snoop played with Erykah Badu, Beastie Boys brought out Nas, and Michael and Michael surprised the crowd with an appearance by Margaret Cho. There you have it–your rapid Bonnaroo wrap up. It was all very exciting!

Michael has a great collection of haiku poems detailing his experience at the ‘Roo — check them out HERE.

Anyway, I didn’t bring a nice camera because I always forget to bring a nice camera, but I did manage to collect some great photos from the wiser people that did. Behold a smattering of Bonnaroo photos below the cut.
