Come Join us in Tel Aviv, March 25th. More info at the Corner Prophets site. Peace!
I started recording rap tracks in 1998. In the summer of 2000 small Jerusalem indie label FACT Records released “The Blue Period” and the rest is history. So, on Saturday March 6th, 10pm, i will be celebrating a decade of Heb-Hop, along with my dear friend and super M.C Rebel Sun (of Coolooloosh fame) and promising newcomers Ruff and DJ Funkay Fish. This will happen at the Cosa Nostra bar/club in Tel Aviv. We’re also celebrating the imminent release of the new Sagol Remixed 2000-2010 compilation album (details tba). Hope to see y’all there!
This Friday, Jan 29th, at the Cameri Theater in Tel Aviv, a host of Israeli artists, musicians and actors will hold a fundraising event for the people of Haiti. All revenues will be transferred to Haiti by event organizator IFA (Israeli Flying Aid) and will be used for medical, humanitarian and spiritual assistance in Haiti.
Among the participants in the event: Ninette Tayeb, Mooky, Keren Peles, Ivry Lieder, Alma Zohar, Mosh Ben Ari, Jeremy Kaplan, Sagol 59 (me!) and many others. The event will be hosted by Sarit Vino-Elad and Danny Kushmaro.
We’ve been really spoiled this year with DJs coming over to Israel. This year, Israel saw Kenny Dope, DJ Vadim, Tony Touch, LCD Soundsystem, Danny Krivit, Daedalus, DJ Lord, Midfield General, Kid Koala, Craze, Plastikman, Paul Oakenfold and more spinning the wheels of steel in various clubs. This weekend it was Brooklyn’s own DJ Spinna who rocked Tel Aviv’s Block club until the early morn’, with a great set of hip hop, funk, breakbeat, soul and house.
November 1st, hundreds of Activists rallied against the intended deportation of migrant workers from Israel along with their children, most of whom were born in the country. They also protested the statement by Minister of The Interior Eli Yishay (of Shas), who was quoted saying: “They will spread Hepatitis, Tuberculosis and Aids”. The rally, which took place at Tel Aviv venue The Block, featured several Knesset members, as well as social activists and artists Tomer Yosef, Kwami, Useless I.D, Kottage and me.
Last night (Tuesday), Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe performed in front of 5,000 ecstatic fans in Tel Aviv, with their patented mix of catchy pop hooks, witty lyrics and a state-of-the-art multimedia spectacle. They also guested on the “Kochav Nolad” TV show (”A Star Is Born”, Israel’s own American Idol), and raised the show’s ratings to nearly 30%. Watch the Channel 2 Interview here.
Sometimes, truth is indeed stranger than fiction.
33-year-old Micky Louis Mayon, one of America’s 100 Most Wanted criminals, and a member of the Ku Klux Klan, was arrested in a Florentine apartment by the National Immigration Authority’s newly formed Oz enforcement unit.
(Some people here said that Mayon was in a romantically involved with an Israeli girl, whom he got pregnant. When he told her who he was, she freaked out and told the police. He stayed in the Sav Kuch Milega hostel/Indian restaurant in South Tel Aviv where he was seized.)
This past weekend, Balkan Beat Box kicked off the Suzanne Dalal Center’s “Big Stage” festival in Tel Aviv, celebrating the center’s 20th year and Tel Aviv’s 100th. More info on the festival and the Center at danceinisrael. Video clip is a bit choppy, but gives you a great sense of the overall show.

Tel Aviv is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, with a lot of festivals, concerts, shows and special events going on for the whole year. As a special tribute, great Israeli music blog Press Rec & Play has compiled a mixtape containing more than 2 hours of Israeli songs about - or inspired by - the City. Here you can find, among others, the impeccable balladeering of Arik Einstein, some whimsical pop from TeaPacks, the ethnic Folk-Rock of Ehud Banai, New Wave icons Mashina and Tango, 60’s Greek sounds from Aris San as well giants such as Shlomo Artzi, Shalom Hanoch, Matti Caspi and Hava Alberstein. Minor qualms aside (what, no hip hop?) this is a beautiful tribute to Israel’s most vibrant, lively and fast-paced city.
