Mos Def - Supermagic Download

It’s true that it aint easy to sell CDs these days, so labels and artists and clothing companies and brands are all trying new and unique ways of making money from recorded music. Some people are failing and losing money, some are giving music away for free, but Mos Def is selling t-shirts!!
Mos Def, the mc/poet/actor has partnered with clothing company LnA to develop a line of shirts to promote his new album The Ecstatic. Each shirt features the album artwork on the cover and a track list with a special download code on the back. If you buy the shirt, you get the album for free. SoundScan has even agreed to count the shirt as an album sale.
His release of the Ecstatic has seen a lot attention throughout the industry. He has moved nearly 40,000 copies in 2 weeks, but keep in mind they were selling the record for $3.99 on Amazon at first. Anyway, this t-shirt/cd is a pretty genius concept, they are bypassing the middle man and leveraging t shirt sales to make up for unearned record sales revenue. According to the LnA website, the t-shirt is available for pre-order now and will ship July 7th, the current retail price is $39.00. That price tag seems a little high to me but let’s see what happens. I have to think that there is a major label somewhere behind that $39 price tag.
