What’s the Soundtrack of Your Life?

Picture 1 by you.

Today I was feeling very pensive, thinking back on all I had accomplished in the past 21 years of my life. We all have those defining moments in our lives, and our own unique ways of how we remember them. Whether it was the outfit you were wearing, the specific location where you were, or what you remember saying, these are all ways we recount those momentous occasions. And now, with the help of Billboard.com, you can create your own Life Soundtrack. You only need to answer a few simple questions, and then Billboard will compile the #1 hit that corresponds with each milestone!

As you can see from the above picture, my life soundtrack is pretty rich with hits. Usher, Eminem, Maroon 5, and the King of Pop himself. I guess my life soundtrack is well on its way to being a great compilation.

What are your soundtracks like!? Click here to find out!

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach tried to set Katie Couric up with Michael Jackson

Katie Couric was a guest on David Letterman last night and told Letterman that in 2000 she met Michael Jackson in LA. The following day Rabbi Shmuley, who was a close friend of Jackson, called The Today Show asking to speak with Couric. Shmuley asked Couric if she was seeing anyone, and informed her that Jackson was interested in taking her out on a date. Couric declined. Here’s video of the interview.

The Sway Machinery Does “Billie Jean” in Krakow

Obviously MJ’s passing was much on our minds while we were in Krakow, Poland for the Jewish Music Festival, and questions of good taste tend to go out the window when you are in Eastern Europe.  So we went with the impulse and payed homage to the other musical tradition of our youth.  Enjoy!

RIP Vibe Magazine

As seems to be the norm recently in print media, another well-known and respected music publication has folded.  Vibe closed its doors abruptly today, notifying the staff this morning, and immediately halting work on a Michael Jackson tribute issue.  Unfortunately it appears the current issue on newstands will be the magazine’s last.

As internet music sites spread like weeds, with content updated faster, and often times more in tune with their readers interests, it has been hard for print to compete.  Vibe was a great magazine that covered Hip-Hop and its crossover into the Pop realm intelligently and thoughtfully.  It will be missed.

Vibe is survived in the print Hip-Hop world by The Source and XXL.  Rolling Stone and Spin still handle pop.

Rest In Peace!

You Rock My World

R.I.P Michael Jackson by JonMorgan.

JDub Records is missing the King of Pop pretty hard, especially with EVERYONE in New York blasting Michael’s music everywhere. We’ll be dancing for you all weekend, Michael. Until then, check out this article I wrote for Jewcy about the Jewish media’s coverage of his death.

STEREOtype - Ben Wigler (Arizona)

Finally, a new STEREOtype! This time around I got to chat with Arizona’s Ben Wigler. On the Echo Mountain imprint, Arizona plays an odd, creative and complex brand of psychrock-meets-folkpop. Ben handles lead vocals and guitar in Arizona, and his smooth and whispery voice is almost as satisfying as his amazing Jewfro or his off kilter sense of humor. For example:

How many times a week do you speak to your mother?
Probably about once a week, although we gChat more often than that. My sweetheart of a mother likes to pretend that I’m actually a famous, sought-after musician. This helps her justify how little I call, even though she knows that when I’m not on tour or recording in Asheville, I’m usually just sitting around watching all the seasons of 24 continuously (without breaks) in order to fully immerse myself in the action. I have an artist endorsement with both Oh Boy! Oberto!-brand dried meat and adult diaper brand Depends.

I’ll call her up and she’ll go “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!” at the top of her lungs for 30 seconds the way I would if Lars Ulrich decided to call me out of the blue. She is hilarious!

Actually, we talk a lot more when I’m on the road for some reason. I’ll call her about every other day, and send her pictures of Owl-related memorabilia that I collect for her (she loves Owls). One time I drunk dialed my mother when I was tripping on mushrooms in Barcelona.
