40 Years After Abbey Road

abbeyrd_crossing-1

Forty years ago this week, one of the pop world’s most recognizable album covers was photographed on an ordinary-looking street in North London.  Check out BBC’s video “Revisiting Abbey Road 40 Years On”.

Oh, Brother! (A postcard from London)

Writing this from the UK’s capital, where i went to see the great Neil Young tearing down Hyde Park (supported by the likes of Fleet Foxes, Ben Harper, Seasick Steve and The Pretenders). A couple days later saw another brilliant gig, as North Carolina’s own Little Brother brought their unique brand of soulful, honest, down-to-earth type of Hip Hop to an ecstatic crowd in Camden Town’s famous Jazz Cafe. Here’s some footage from this terrific show. Cheerio, Darlings!

Manhattan Bridge Underpass is Open

Still Waters ipod

New York City has decided to reopen the archway under the Manhattan bridge in Dumbo this summer, opening the door for programming and events to be held in the underpass.  Wouldn’t a JDub event here be really cool?  Besides the possibility of performances, the space will also serve as the summer location for the New Amsterdam Market, a farmers market similar to the Borough Market in London or the Reading Terminal Market in Philly.  The Market plans to make its debut on June 28, but the archway could be open much sooner than that, creating another very unique community space for the city.

Kiwicore: An Interview With a New Zealand Musician

Popes of DelRay - What You Do

new_zealandLast week my wife and I had a houseguest from New Zealand. Duane Kennedy currently lives in London but comes from the Auckland area where he played drums in bands and organized shows. I asked him a few questions about music in New Zealand, and after we laughed about some of the country’s offerings, we got to the good stuff. As for the song above, he and friends recorded it over one day in a bedroom. Duane describes it as 12 bar blues, white boy style. “There’s a harmonica part, there was a guy outside playing who thought we were great and wanted to come in and play with us. If the guys in the song knew the mp3 was on a New York blog they would think it’s hilarious.”

Tell me a bit about the New Zealand music scene.
In general the New Zealand music industry, there’s lots of government grants for musicians. The scene is quite small, it’s a small country but a lot of the stuff that comes out is quite good. You have to be unique and original. I’m finding that in London a lot of the bands sound the same but in New Zealand you get a lot of interesting punk, interesting indie. But in the end a lot of bands have to get out of New Zealand to further their careers. A lot move to Australia, to Melbourne. Or quite a few have been going to London as well. A lot that I have talked to find it quite hard because London is expensive and has a lot of bands already. Read More »

There’s a New Heeb in Town

LILO by you.Late last week UK gossip rag The Mirror revealed that Lindsay Lohan, having attended a Ronson family Bar Mitzvah in London, subsequently changed her Facebook status to “I’m converting.” At first I balked, but then I saw the same news parroted on my most favorite (and eerily accurate iTabloid) Ohnotheydidn’t. I’ve heard a lot about LiLo and SamRo having a tough time lately, but if she is in actuality looking to join the tribe, I am sure she’ll be welcomed with open arms. I mean- didn’t we learn anything from Mean Girls?! More pictures of the girls loitering outside a London synagogue here.
