Ben Hesse & I founded JDub in our senior year at NYU, inspired by a series of experimental (and sometimes otherworldly) bedroom recordings Ben made in 2001. Simply put, the man has a GIFT. Since then, he’s released two albums (Grab Noble Station, which features yours truly on drum programming & samples, in the Webstore), and now he’s back with a FREE EP. You should download it immediately.
After surviving a dangerous winter climb in Rocky Mountain this past year, Ben returned home to craft an album of music inspired by his near death experience. The result is the Ice Mountain EP – a collection of originals and old-time songs. It’s a blend of Ben’s interests in old time music and Americana (ironic that its a digital release?) with a little bit of indie rock experimentation thrown in for good measure. Recorded at home with the help of friends, Ice Mountain falls somewhere in between Neil Young’s On the Beach and the Folk Anthology.
Five of the songs are original and three are old-time standards shined up for public consumption. Download it and pass it around!
Download from iTunes or directly here: part I and part II.

If you download one free album this week, I would recommend “Hospital Blossoms” by the Wailing Wall
. If you download one album for $1, I recommend “Reservoir,” the debut album by British group Fanfarlo. They are offering the full album plus bonus tracks for $1 at their website
. Plus the mp3s are high quality and DRM-free, and the website interface makes the checkout as simple as possible.
“Reservoir” was produced by Peter Katis, who also worked on records by The National and Interpol, and Fanfarlo reminds me of those groups, with a touch of Glen Hansard.
