Do you remember the movie Reality Bites? Have you ever heard the song, “My Sharona”? I’m sure you have and I’m sure you loved it and have rocked out to it at some point. The song was written by the band The Knack, a new wave quartet based in Los Angeles who rose to fame in 1979 when this tune became #1 international hit. Doug Fieger, guitarist, singer, and co-writer for the band died Sunday at the young age of 57.
A few less known facts: Sharona was Sharona Alperin, Fieger’s 17 year old girlfriend, who like every other member of the band was Jewish. The song has been parodied by Weird Al Yankovic and was revealed to be on George W. Bush’s presidential iPod.

Say what you will about the National Prayer Breakfast and its backers, but the news from JTA is that President Obama brought AWJS into the room in his remarks about Haiti relief:
WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Obama cited the American Jewish World Service among groups that exemplify “God’s grace, and the compassion and decency of the American people.”
Obama, addressing the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, spoke of recent efforts to bring relief to Haitians after the island nation’s devastating earthquake.
God’s grace, he said, was expressed in Haiti “through multiple faith-based efforts. By evangelicals at World Relief. By the American Jewish World Service. By Hindu temples, and mainline Protestants, Catholic Relief Services, African-American churches, the United Sikhs. By Americans of every faith, and no faith, uniting around a common purpose, a higher purpose.”
Go Jews!

Between August 2008 to August 2009, Mochilla and VTech brought you an exceptional array of musical events that pushed the boundaries of today’s music. Ethiopian jazz, Colombian Funk, Brasilian Folk, Jazz, fusion and Hip-Hop – where elders met with youth, where every idea is good, where mistakes are just part of the process and where the audience is the judge. In “Hear The World,” Eric Coleman (Mochilla), mixes the very best musical moments of the year into one completely exclusive mix CD taken from the recordings made.
Hear The World is an amazing mix of sounds from every corner of the globe and whether you are fan of “world music” or not, you can’t help but nod your head, tap your feet and groove along to these songs.
Featuring: Mulatu, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and the Suite for Ma Dukes Orchestra, Arthur Verocai, Azymuth, Quantic and his Combo Barbaro, Karriem Riggins, Jackson Conti, and Exile.

Dj Spooky + Sussan Deyhim: Azadi (The New Complexity)
Acclaimed DJ, producer, poet, documentarian and activist DJ Spooky is back with his latest project called The Secret Song (album + DVD). The album isnʼt really an album: itʼs a manifesto about the place of history in our modern collaged, scrambled, sampla-delic to the core, mega info overloaded digital culture. With references from Thorstein Veblenʼs “Theory of the Leisure Class” and John Maynard Keynes classic in the field of economics “The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money” over to hip hopʼs relationship to psychoanalysis and a la Edward Bernayʼs concept of the “manufacture of consent” – DJ Spookyʼs new album is a groundbreaking meditation on hip hop and electronic musics relationship to philosophy, economics, and the science of sound. Special guests on the record include Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, The Jungle Borthers, The Coup, Rob Swift (The Executioners), spoken word poet Mike Ladd and many more!
This is the first track off the record called Azadi and features renowned Iranian artist Sussan Deyhim. The term Azadi simply means “Freedom” in Farsi. The song “Azadi” is an interpretation of an ancient poem by the legendary poet Rumi, sung by Sussan Deyhim, with prouduction by Dj Spooky.
“The Secret Song” will be out in October, 2009. For a translation of the lyrics and more info about the project, head to:
